Endemic birds of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta

The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta (SNSM) is considered as the world’s most important continental center for endemism. Its avifauna is doubtless one of its most attractive features, with close to 70 endemic taxa, of which 24 are currently recognized as species. Unfortunately, scarce knowledge about these birds’ biology and natural histories, hinders a precise evaluation of their conservation status and the design of efficient measures for their protection.  Combining estimates of population density, modelling algorithms and geographic information systems, this project will generate detailed information about the ecology, life history and spatial distribution of the endemic species of the SNSM. The resulting information will be essential to identify the most important areas for each species within this unique mountain range.

Project objectives

Identify the environmental determinants for the distribution of these species at multiple spatial scales

Identify the most critical areas for the conservation of endemic birds in the Sierra, i.e. those that hold populations of endemic birds of conservation concern

Identify the areas of high bird endemism, i.e. those with the highest richness and diversity of endemic species

Reevaluate the extinction risk for all endemic birds of the Sierra, in light of new information about their population size and occupation range
